Summer is fun for many reasons: outdoor parties, barbecues, parks, swimming pools, and the beach! Even though you might be having fun your hair is suffering from UV rays, chlorine, salt, and sweat damage! There are many summertime factors that effect the quality of your hair:

1. Ultraviolet radiation: Exposure in the sun strips the moisture from your hair, causing dryness, frizz, and changing its structure. Sun rays also break the natural pigments of your hair that act as a filter to solar radiation, which causes lightening.

2. Humidity: Causes dryness, harshness and fragility.

3. Swimming: Chlorine of swimming pools or the salt from the ocean expose your hair to damaging elements. The salt, copper sulphate, and algae in the water are aggressive to the hair protein.

All of these elements decrease the brilliance, strength and resistance of the hair. But do not be afraid! Here are the tips on how to minimize the damaging effects of the summer, and repair dryness that our favorite season creates:

1. Wear a hat or use UV protection spray such as TIGI Bed Head Totally Beachin’ Beach Bound Protection Spray

2. Do not rise out conditioner or use a leave-in

3. Wash your hair after a day at the pool or beach

4. Avoid using “natural” bleach agents, such as lemon juice. The results are unpredictable!

5. Find your line: Choose products specifically designed to fight dry summer hair; shampoo, conditioner and finishing products

6. Embrace your natural hair: Use summer as an excuse to bring out your wavy texture.

7. Do a professional or natural conditioning treatment. They can help prevent or heal damaged hair.

PROFESSIONAL TREATMENTS

KERATIN

Keratin treatment is a process that rejuvenates the hair fiber by adding the natural hair protein (keratin) back into the cortex of each hair strand. It fights frizz, adds strength and shine, and makes day to day styling easier. Keratin treatment washes out over time and lasts about 5 months with proper maintenence. Something to consider, not all Keratin treatments are safe for you! The Peter Coppola Kertain Treatment offered at The Drawing Room New York is formadelhyde free, which is safe for you, your hair, and your colorist!

First step to the treatment is a shampoo with a claryfying shampoo that penetartes inside the hair strands. This shampoo is massaged into the hair for 3 minutes absorbing, literally like a sponge, residues on the hair which can obstruct the passage of reconstruction. Now the hair is ready to receive the reconstruction treatment. The keratin cream is then applied to the hair section by section, and is left on for about 30 minutes. During this time, the Keratin is being absorbed into the cortex of the hair. Next the leftover product on the outside of the hair is rinsed off. The hair is then blow dried and flat ironed, sealing the Keratin into the hair.

In a blender combine together one banana with 1 tablespoon of oil of your choice (olive, argan, coconut), blend until a paste has formed. Separate hair into sections and apply from root to ends. Wind hair into a loose bun and secure with a clip, cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 30 minuets to one hour. Rinse, and then shampoo and condition hair. Banana is perfect for treating damaged hair because they contain tryptophan, an essential amino acid that strengthens hair. The magic fruit also contains potassium, a mineral that restores the hair to a healthy pH.

avacado

Masks for damaged hair

The main cause for frizzy hair is a lack of moisture, causing the cuticle (outside layer) of the hair strand to stick out. To smooth the cuticle you need a heavy mask rich in fat, we suggest avocado and egg yolk. The high amount of fatty acid and vitamin E present in the fruit easily absorbs into the hair strand which helps combat frizzy hair. Mash one ripe avocado with an egg yolk. Shampoo your hair then apply the mask throughout the hair from roots to ends. Cover with a shower cap for 30 minuets. Rinse and condition to get rid of the avocado scent.

Do one of these masks once a week to help safe your hair from summer stress.

Now you have all the tips to restore your hair back to shiny, smooth, healthy, and happy hair!
